I feel very strongly about giving back to the community. If you have a talent, no matter what that talent is, you should find a way so that you can share it and use it to make the world a better place. You don’t have to be a philanthropist or some big name celebrity to make a difference. Change can happen from the littlest thing, which means anyone who wants to can create change and perhaps change the world in the process.
Over the years I have donated my services to many causes, and I have to say, that the fun I had in doing the work is reward enough, but knowing that it’s something that pays forward, makes it even more important. The experiences that stand out most to me are my work with the Wisconsin Club for the School of Education, the Ronald McDonald House, the American Family Children’s Hospital, and the MSCR Art Cart. And, as I wrote this, I realized, that I have an affinity to organizations that help children. Perhaps it’s because children have their entire future ahead of them and by being the recipient of goodwill they will in turn grow up to know the value of community involvement. That’s why I view the work I did with the American Family Children’s Hospital in such high regard, because this hospital is helping kids to have a future. By doing one t-shirt design I was able to help raise $2,000! And to a sick kid, every bit of money that amazing hospital gets is another chance at a future.
Yet, above all this, the one closest to my heart was the fundraiser that Madison College’s Art Club did for the MSCR Art Cart which I spearheaded as the Club’s secretary. What we did was a screen printing workshop where the Neenah Paper company donated the paper and we then sold the prints made and gave all the money to the MSCR Art Cart. The reason that this was so important to me was as a kid my artistic outlet in the summer was classes provided by MSCR. My favorite was the drawing classes I took at Olbrich where I could spend hours drawing plants. Therefore, as someone who grew up to be an artist and designer I wanted to encourage the program to keep inspiring kids like they did with me.
If you are a not-for-profit organization look for some design work, feel free to contact me. I’m here to pay it forward.
